Quality: Our traditional Thai Silk scarves are authentic and original and differ from other scarves in both quality and production. The weft thread is always produced from Thailand s indigenous polyvoltine (Bombyx mori) silk worm which gives the garment both it s horizontal texture and unique luster. It s sheen results from two unique blends: one color for the warp and another for the weft. The color changes as you hold the Thai silk fabric at varying angles against light. Machine made silk, while beautiful and "silky," does not have the textured characteristics of Thai silk. Both the warp and weft threading is produced from the silk of foreign hybrids called bivoltine silk worms (aka white silk worm). These worms produce large, white cocoons that are suitable for factory reeling and weaving. Since both the warp and weft threads are identical the texture is homogenous. Raw silk scarves use the same thread for both the warp and weft thread. They appear to be knitted more so than woven and easily snag. They have neither the horizontal texture nor the beautiful sheen of an authentic Thai scarf. An authentic Thai scarf is "tightly woven" on a traditional loom as opposed to knitted. These silk scarves as well as silk garments have been produced in the Isan region of Thailand back to antiquity. Isan was formerly part of Lao, Camobia and historically part of the Khmer empire. For this reason these scarves are also considered Khmer silk scarves as the silk worms and looming process are identical. Jim Thompson revised and re-marketed this process by focusing on using the chinese silk worm for the warp weave while raising awareness in the west.
