The 40 Gauge has 6 total barbs for more detailed work and to help prevent needle breaks. The 36 Gauge is the thickest and most sturdy of the three needles. This is used for larger pieces and areas. Great for attaching parts but not ideal for detailed work. Great starter needle as it is thicker so less change of breakage. The 38 Gauge needle is the best all around needle that can be used for both larger pieces and some detail work. This is the most popular size due to its versatility and also a great needle to start with on many projects. The 40 Gauge needle is a great felting needle for detailed work. The needles is a thinner gauge by design and is more vulnerable to breakage with aggressive movement. On this particular needle there are 6 barbs to help maintain a smoother finish.
